Malta’s Summer Carnival cancelled after tragic death

Malta’s Summer Carnival has been cancelled.

Organisers announced the decision following the tragic death of a Carnival enthusiast from Hamrun.

Jean-Paul Bonett, 45, was working on a float at the Tal-Buffalo & Co Carnival Company in Marsa when he was electrocuted and died.

Police said the electric shock killed him instantly.

Festivals Malta announced that the Summer Carnival would not go ahead as a mark of respect to Mr Bonett.

In a statement, the Ministry of Culture in Valletta said: ‘He was one of the best artists in the carnival sector and for a long time leader of one of the main carnival companies.

‘All activities planned for this weekend will not be held.’

A flood of tributes have been paid to Mr Bonett on Facebook.

He was a security guard in Marsa and a former employee of Progress Press.
