Malta’s over-75s can now take the bus for free

Senior citizens aged 75 and over can use Malta’s buses for free from today.

An estimated 19,000 people qualify for the new scheme, which was first announced in the Budget last October.

Children, students and people with disabilities already benefit from free bus travel in Malta.

Transport Minister Ian Borg said that the government’s aim was to eventually provide free public transport for everyone.

Launching the scheme in Mosta on Monday, Dr Borg said that eligible senior citizens would pay their bus fare as usual using a Tallinja card and then receive a refund for the full amount at the end of each month.
