The Maltese music community is mourning the loss of one of its pillars, Mro Sammy Galea, who passed away today aged 86.
Sammy Galea, has left his mark on the local and international music scene, thanks to various awards and honours in local and foreign festivals, including Malta’s 1975 Eurovision Entry, “Singing this Song” which was sung by Renato. In 1994, Galea also won the Malta Song Festival, and subsequently won the same festival for four years in a row.
Sammy was married to a woman with a distinct and legendary voice, Doreen Galea, and together they have three children, who are successful musicians in their own right, Dominic, Benedict and Manolito.
Tributes have already started pouring in. Malta’s Arts Council described Sammy’s original works as being one of the contributors to Malta’s collective musical inventory. Mark Spiteri Lucas thanked Mro Sammy Galea for his continuous advice and for always helping him whenever he needed.
All of us at Bay would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his relatives, his friends, and all those who were lucky enough to work with him through his vast career!
