Malta’s magical candlelight festival is on this weekend

It’s one of the most magical nights in Malta’s annual events calendar – and it’s happening this weekend.

Birgu by Candlelight is a treat for all the family in Vittoriosa, one of Malta’s oldest and most historic cities.

Three days and nights of cultural activities including music, dance and pageantry culminate in Birgu by Candlelight on Saturday night, when the electric lights are switched off and the medieval streets are lit by thousands of candles.

All the houses are also lit up, chandeliers hang in the streets, and the sound of music flows throughout the winding pathways.

There’s also live music in Vittoriosa Square over the three nights.

Most of the museums and historical buildings in the area open at a discounted price, including the magnificent architectural gem of Fort St Angelo.

Visitors are encouraged to take their time to discover the beauty of Vittoriosa.

Birgu Fest really does bring out the best of Malta.

Fort St Angelo will be the centre of Heritage Malta’s festivities this weekend.

The historic fortness will be magically lit up for the first time using traditional torches.

There will also be guided tours in English over three days:
