The highest earning speed cameras in Malta have been revealed – with one site raking in an estimated €2,000 a day from speeding motorists.
The top 10 most lucrative cameras netted an estimated €3 million over a 12 month period in 2017, based on the latest figures from the National Statistics Office – Malta.
The most profitable is the notorious speed camera in Notary Zarb Street in Attard.
It trapped nearly 12,300 drivers in 2017.
The camera installed on the Siggiewi Bypass caught 9,055 motorists.
The device on the Birkirkara Bypass was in third place, flashing 7,694 speeding drivers.
In total, Malta’s speed cameras flashed 78,388 times in 2017 – an average of 214 per day.
International road safety expert Mark Lucas defended their use as ‘highly effective’.
He told 89.7 Bay: ‘Speed cameras will pay for themselves several times over in the money saved to the economy by preventing deaths and serious injuries.
‘Cameras can catch far higher numbers of speeding motorists than traffic police with mobile cameras, and at much lower cost, freeing up police for other duties that cannot be conducted by technology, such as breath-testing.’
The National Statistics Office transport statistics reveal that out of around 254,000 drivers, nearly 142,000 were fined in 2017.
Parking tickets made up the bulk of traffic offences, with 90 per cent of the 93,626 tickets issued by wardens.
The figures also showed you’re more likely to get a parking ticket in Sliema and St Paul’s Bay than anywhere else in Malta and Gozo.
