The lives of many Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Intersex & Queer (LGBTIQ+) individuals in Malta have definitely improved thanks to changes in legislation which provides equal rights and protection to all people regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression and for that we have much to celebrate.
Yet our struggles as a minority are never fully won over. Our rights can never be taken for granted, especially when being a minority brings with it a lot of isolation, prejudice and misinformation which can only be tackled with awareness raising, visibility and protest.
Malta Pride is a celebration as much as it is a protest and an opportunity to bring about visibility on the issues that matter.
Allied Rainbow Communities, the NGO coordinating Malta Pride together with other NGOs working for the LGBTQ+ community have come up with the theme “From Riots to Rainbows – 50 Years since Stonewall”. The theme is intended to conscientise people on how Pride originated and the spirit behind it.
In 1969, the NYPD raided the Stonewall Inn, which was a watering hole for LGBTQ+ people and what was considered a safe space in a time where such people were still being sent to Mental Health hospitals, harassed, beaten up or executed in cold blood in the streets of New York City. In that raid, the patrons of the Inn protested and rioted against the oppression of the Police and the system in general by marching down St. Christopher’s Street.
Year after year the Pride movement grew and spread in many other cities and across the world.

Partners of Malta Pride already confirmed
YoBetit will be the Main Partners of Malta Pride this year and 89.7 Bay have once again been announced as the preferred media partners for the event.
Organising most events revolving around Pride Week require huge budgets that a non-Profit like ARC depends mostly on Fundraising and Partnerships to execute. For the first time, Malta Pride has launched a crowdfunding campaign with the goal of raising €5,000 from the general public. Donations of any amount can be made on http://www.zaar.com.mt/projects/maltapride19/. Donors making contributions of EUR10 and upwards will get limited Malta Pride tokens and special prizes.
