Malta is in mourning yet again, as one of its best artists, Ed Schembri, passed away today, aged 45.
Ed was quite a unique artist – unique in how he applied paint to the canvas. His hands were his most prized tools. The advantage of using such a raw tool is the proximity he used to get to the painting, describing it as a personal affair between artist and canvas – an everlasting connection.
His paintings always touched on the personal. It was plain to see the connection Ed had with his subjects, as his paintings are always raw, honest, intimate and at times nostalgic.
ALS Activist Bjorn Formosa was the first to break the news. Ed donated his works regularly for them to be auctioned in aid of the ALS Malta Foundation.
Recently, Ed was also a guest at the Eden Cinemas for the special screening of a Frida Kahlo Documentary, as he prepared a special exhibition of his Kahlo-inspired work in the cinema foyer.
Tributes have been pouring in all afternoon following the news, including from MP David Thake and TV producer Peter Carbonaro, to mention but a few. Hundreds of tributes, all of which have one common adjective, which is being attributed to Ed – “a true artist, and a gentleman.”
All of us at Bay and Eden Leisure Group send our deepest condolences to his wife, his children and all his relatives and friends, at such a difficult time.
