Malta ‘wants to become Europe’s electric car leader’

Could this be another first for Malta?

Joseph Muscat has called for Malta to become the European leader in electric car use.

The Prime Minister urged Maltese drivers to ‘seriously consider’ switching to electric-powered vehicles and announced that ‘special benefits will be given to those who buy electric cars and charge them at home’.

Addressing industry experts during the first E-mobility international summit at the InterContinental Arena and Conference Centre in St Julian’s, Dr Muscat revealed he was in talks with Enemalta to start a pilot project to encourage more drivers to make the switch.

He said the government was also ready to listen to proposals on how Malta can become the first EU state running its cars solely on electricity.

A few weeks ago the Prime Minister suggested that the island of Gozo would be the ideal test ground for the world’s motor industry to test the widespread use of electric cars.
