A Maltese delegation comprising two competitors, a coach, and the President of the Malta Esports Association attended the World Esports Championship held in Romania from August 24th to September 3rd.

This event marked the fifteenth edition of the World Esports Championship organized by the International Esports Federation, of which the Malta Esports Association is a member. Malta’s participation in this global competition represented its third year of involvement.

The 15th World Esports Championship witnessed the participation of over 600 competitors from 111 countries, competing for a total prize pool of $500,000. The event also featured various performances, concerts, educational seminars, and exercise activities.

Over 10,000 attendees were present at the opening ceremony and games, with thousands more attending the concerts. Additionally, the event garnered a significant online viewership, with the Mobile Legends finals between Indonesia and the Philippines attracting over 700,000 viewers.

Malta’s representatives, Lyon Lee Buhagiar and Malcolm Said, were selected by the Malta Esports Association through competitions organized by Level Academy and Esports Plaza. Malta achieved a commendable performance, with both competitors advancing from the group stages and into the playoffs. Lyon secured the 17th place out of 91 countries, while Malcolm ranked 33rd out of 97 countries.

In the Tekken 7 competition, Malta defeated the Dominican Republic, Maldives, and India but was eliminated in the later stages against Georgia. In eFootball, Malta secured victories against Algeria, Honduras, and Bahrain while drawing against Australia and France, ultimately being eliminated in the playoffs against Uruguay.
