A footballer who plays for the Malta national team has been jailed for 15 months.
Clifford Gatt Baldacchino, 31, was told he ‘only had himself to blame’ for ignoring a previous court order to stay away from his ex-girlfriend.
The Gzira United centre-back admitted harassing his former partner after he bombarded her with phone calls and followed her to the beach.
The court was told how the Gatt Baldacchino had been in a relationship with the woman which she then ended.
The prosecution claimed he became ‘obsessed’ with her, stalking her and inundating her with phone calls.
Magistrate Ian Farrugia ruled the footballer’s actions added up to ‘enormous harassment and anxiety’ for the victim.
He had already been banned from contacting the woman and had been handed a suspended sentence in August for a similar offence.
Gatt Baldacchino was jailed for a total of 15 months and fined €1,000.
