Malta fans celebrate first home victory in 13 years

Malta fans have been celebrating after the national side made a dream start to their European Championship campaign.

10-man Malta beat the Faroe Islands in their first home win in 13 years.

Goals from Nwoko and Borg secured an impressive 2-1 victory at Ta’ Qali.

Malta’s last win at the National Stadium dated back to 2006 when the Maltese beat Hungary 2-1.

Speaking after the match, Malta captain Michael Mifsud told reporters: ‘We showed a lot of heart.

‘We have a lot of enthusiasm and courage now, because this team has a lot of belief in its potential.’

Fans quickly took to Facebook to celebrate the result and many described Malta’s performance as ‘excellent’.

One wrote: ‘Well done Malta great result topping the group at moment!’

Another added: ‘What a game. I also loved their winning mentality and fighting spirit.’

A third posted: ‘Well done, a very good performance by the whole team.’

Another supporter added: ‘Goes to show when the coach is a national the team plays with more heart. At club level it’s different but at a national level the coach should be Maltese.’

However, not everyone was so impressed.

One Maltese fan posted on Facebook: ‘Good result and performance without any doubt, but let’s not get carried away by it.

‘We won against a nation of only 50,000 people!’
