Malta Airport has recorded its busiest year ever after more than 7.3 million passengers travelled through its doors in 2019.
Bosses said 2019 was a fantastic year for the airport with passenger numbers up 5.8 per cent year-on-year.
A spokeswoman for the airport said: ‘This solid full-year performance was partly driven by improved flight schedules for both the winter and the summer months.
‘During the course of 2019, in fact, Malta International Airport welcomed a new airline, launched 18 new routes, and introduced other developments aimed at further enhancing the islands’ connectivity, particularly in the off-peak months.’
August was the busiest month with 823,000 passengers arriving or departing from the airport.
December was also busy with passenger numbers rising by 15 per cent compared to the same month in 2018.
Britain remained by far the biggest market for Malta, followed by Italy, Germany and France.
However, passenger numbers from Spain rose by 17 per cent over the year.
