Researchers have found a new birth control pill for males which is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
This pill could balance out the contraceptive burden by providing more options available for men. After carrying out tests on mice, researches want to start trying out the pills on people in the second half of 2022. According to them, this pill doesn’t just prevent pregnancy, but also has no obvious side-effects.
So far when it came to contraception methods, women could take several pills, use patches or intrauterine devices. However, men could only use condoms which carry the possibility of tearing up and mostly permanent vasectomies. Since vasectomies are expensive and not always successful, an effective and long-lasting contraceptive pill for men was needed
Dr Noman, a graduate student in the Gunda Georg laboratory at the University of Minnesota said: “We wanted to develop a non-hormonal male contraceptive to avoid these side effects.”
