Just yesterday, a rare sighting of at least one whale was spotted and filmed off of the coast of Munxar in Gozo. The video was posted online by Melania Bajada, showing a whale surfacing the waters to breathe.
However, according to Bajada, there was actually more than one whale that could be seen from Sanap Cliffs, though the species of whale is unclear.
Several people online have speculated that it might be a fin whale, which can grow to a maximum length of 26m and a maximum weight of 74 tonnes.
The majestic fin whale.
Words cannot describe how it felt to hear it blow. Like thunder, you could actually feel it resonating through the air.

A few hours later, a local photographer, Benjamin Grech, managed to capture a stunning shot of ‘the majestic fin whale’ and posted it online, writing, ‘Words cannot describe how it felt to hear it blow. Like thunder you could actually feel it resonating through the air’.
Grech’s photo also confirmed its species, aka the fin whale – which although are usually rare to spot in Maltese waters, aren’t new to the Mediterranean Sea.
