Local Artist JC.B Opens Up About His Love For Rap On Malta’s Top 10 With Jake

Growing up, JC.B used to listen to a lot of rock ‘n’ roll with his dad, cruising around in his car and blasting anything from Guns N Roses to Led Zeppelin – and that kickstarted his love for music. Then he started to delve into rap and listened to a lot of Kendrick Lamar and Eminem…

From then on, he says, there was almost an instinctive feeling, and he realised: ‘I’m different from my dad, I love his music still, but I love my own too’. JC.B then pointed towards Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly studio album for helping him to thoroughly understand the concept of rap itself.

The local artist went on to reveal that he often gets told to focus on something else and leave music as a hobby. However, as he stated, ‘I am fortunate enough to be at University, so it’s like I have a backup plan… I think it’s important to have one, it’s realistic. There’s only so much you can do locally.’

But what I say to that is that I don’t make music to reach any charts or play in big stadiums, it’s something that I just do for me, to have a creative outlet and a platform to express myself and my emotions’, he added.

And last but not least, Jake had to ask the burning question of every Malta’s Top 10 interview ever – collaboration plans. Though JC.B said that he has no one specific in mind, he did reveal that he works a lot alongside fellow artists Milo Banks, Sam Christie, and Chris Vella, among others. BUT, as he added, ‘I’ve always wanted to collab with Caro, he’s the first Maltese rapper with genuine, lyrical English content’.

In the meantime, JC.B maintained that his biggest goal is making it abroad, as well as touring abroad in major countries like America.

Malta’s Top 10 with Jake will be back next Monday at 9:30 pm!
