Liverpool boss refuses to give up on Champions League

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted his side can still reach the Champions League final despite a bruising defeat in Barcelona.

The Reds were beaten 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final tie on Wednesday evening as the hosts’ superior finishing made the difference across a largely well-balanced contest.

Having failed to register an away goal, Liverpool now need a similarly impressive win at Anfield next week if they are to keep their European dream alive.

Klopp said he was not ready to give up on the possibility just yet.

He told reporters after the match: ‘It is difficult because it is Barcelona and they can play for counter-attack which doesn’t help us but because it is football we should still try.

‘People who haven’t seen the game will see the result and say strange things about it.

‘As a manager, what I judge on is how we played. I am completely happy and proud of the boys.

‘I think it was the best Champions League game we played not only this year but last year as well.

‘Against a side like this, playing this kind of football, I was completely happy.’
