Liam, 8, swims from Comino to Gozo for a great cause

A brave schoolboy has become the youngest person to swim from Comino to Gozo.

Liam Daly, 8, began the epic challenge on Friday morning and finished in less than an hour despite strong currents between the two islands.

He completed the two kilometre distance between Comino and Hondoq Bay in Qala in just 51 minutes.

Liam, who is a pupil at Victoria primary school, dedicated his swim to the campaign to keep plastic out of our seas.

He said: It wasn’t easy, in fact it was quite hard really but it was a great challenge.’

Liam was welcomed back to dry land by his parents and friends as well as Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana who gave him a huge hug.

She told him: ‘Gozo is proud of you.’

Qala mayor Paul Buttigieg also congratulated Liam, telling him: ‘You are an inspiration to future generations.’

Liam is already looking for a fresh challenge for next year and hopes to swim between Malta and Gozo in 2020.
