Kicking off another great year of Malta Pride

Malta Pride 2019 officially launched yesterday, 4th of August with a press conference in Valletta.

15 years ago, a small group of people gathered in Valletta and marched down its streets with banners in hands, raising awareness for the LGBTQI+ community here in Malta.

“The sound of 100 feet may have seemed like a whisper at the time, but for the gay community it was the drum which beat we still march on today, bigger, louder and brighter,” said Clayton Mercieca, community manager of Allied Rainbow Communities (ARC).

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Manhattan riots, where members of the LGBTQI+ community rioted against a police raid in a frequented bar. Malta Pride’s theme for this year ‘Riots to Rainbows’ is an ode to this historical event in Pride history.

“Pride is there because in a world where people constantly seek excuses to hate and harm each other, we fight and march for the right to love. Is that enough reason to be proud?” Mercieca added.

Other speakers for the night included Equality Minister Edward Zammit Lewis who was not present but still conveyed his message through a video recording, Deputy Speaker Claudette Buttigieg, and Main partner Yobetit.
