The box office has a new king and his name is John Wick.
The third installment of the Keanu Reeves franchise has taken the top spot at the global box office, ending the three-week reign of Avengers: Endgame.
John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum grossed an estimated $57 million in its opening weekend in the US and Canada alone, pushing Avengers into second place.
Joe Drake, chairman of film makers Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said: This is the best reviewed film of the series so far.
‘We believe word-of-mouth will continue to drive strong business for the film all over the world.’
Maltese film fans at the Eden Cinemas in St Julian’s gave the new movie the thumbs up.
One wrote on Facebook: ‘Absolutely recommend this. Great action choreography. No dull moments. Characters are just so outstanding.’
Another added: ‘Such a great movie, more than awesome!’
John Wick: Chapter 3, which stars Halle Berry in a supporting role, cost an estimated $75 million to make and roughly $40 million to market.
The last time Reeves had a number one opening was in 2008 with The Day the Earth Stood Still.
