Joaquin Phoenix Pays Tribute to His Late Brother By Naming His New Baby ‘River’

Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix, primarily known for his role as the Joker, has just welcomed his first child into the world with actress Rooney Mara! Their newborn was named in beautiful tribute of Phoenix’s beloved late brother, River Phoenix.

Joaquin Phoenix Thought Rooney Mara Disliked Him When They First Met

Being a fairly private couple, the media was unaware of the pregnancy, until Page Six revealed back in May that they were possibly expecting a child. Thanks to director Victor Kossakovsky, an announcement of River’s birth was publicly made at this year’s Zurich Film Festival.

Whilst promoting ‘Gunda’, a documentary executively produced by Joaquin Phoenix himself, the director revealed the reason for his absence:  “He just got a baby, by the way, his name was…a beautiful son called River, so he cannot promote [the film] right now”.

At the tender age of 23, River Phoenix, the ‘My Own Private Idaho’ and ‘Stand by Me’ star tragically passed away in 1993 after a fatal drug overdose. Back in January, Joaquin, who was also in Malta some years back, for the filming of Gladiator, delved further into how his brother’s demise greatly affected him and his family during an interview with 60 Minutes.

“I feel like in virtually every movie that I made, there was a connection to River in some way”, Phoenix stated. This could be viewed as a monumental interview considering that he is usually a private person.

The acting couple initially met during the filming of ‘Her’ but eventually started their relationship when working together once again for the movie ‘Mary Magdalene’ in late 2016. Congratulations are in order for the happy couple!
