Jail for thug who mugged British couple in Gozo

A thug who attacked a British couple in one of Gozo’s most picturesque villages has been jailed for five years.

Sergio Andres Guzman Aguilar admitted robbing and assaulting Deborah Aitkenhead, 55, and Michael Dreadshaw, 58, in Xaghra.

The 29-year-old fled with the woman’s jewellery after the attack in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The court in Victoria heard the couple were walking home after a night out in the village when a man started throwing rocks and them.

He then violently assaulted Mrs Aitkenhead, repeatedly hitting her head against a car door and throwing her to the ground.

Aguilar, who was born in Colombia but holds a Spanish passport, was caught on camera running away from the scene after police searched CCTV footage in the main village square.

News of the crime shocked Gozo last weekend.

Xaghra is one of the most popular villages in the Maltese Islands for British expats.
