Calling all Instagram users! 🗣️ The social media app has added a new feature that enables you to choose from a wide variety of pronouns, or submit a request, for your preferred pronouns on your profile!
Taking to Twitter, Instagram announced, ‘Add pronouns to your profile. The new field is available in a few countries, with plans for more.’ Currently, the tech giant didn’t explain which countries the feature works in, but the US appears to be one of them.
The new feature also allows users to add up to 4 pronouns from the app’s list by going to ‘Edit Profile’ and clicking on ‘Pronouns’, then typing in the search tool.
In the Help Centre, the app stated, ‘When having a conversation, people use pronouns to refer to someone without using their name. You can add up to four pronouns to your Instagram profile to help others refer to you’.
Instagram appears to have an expansive list beyond commonly used pronouns she/her, he/him, and they/them. Other pronoun options include xe/xem/xyr, ze/hir/hirs, thon/thons, ey/em/eir, fae/faer/faers, and many more!
And, if you don’t find your pronoun, you can submit a request to Instagram! If the pronoun option is not available on your device (make sure your Instagram has the latest update), the app suggests including your pronouns in your bio.
Plus, users can choose whether the pronouns will then display next to your name or only to followers. Those under the age of 18 will have the setting automated to show pronouns only to followers.
