Instagram currently removing number of ‘likes’ in Malta

In a big move which could change the nature of social media, Instagram are slowly removing the number of likes from users’ accounts here in Malta.

This means that while you will still be able to see the number of likes your posts garnered, the public won’t.

Instagram first implemented this change as an ‘experiment’ in Italy, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. They reportedly launched this test in order to combat mental health problems caused by the social pressure of having ‘likes’ on your posts and said they would roll it out across more countries if the experiment worked.

Questions have been raised about what effects this will have on businesses and social media influencers who rely on engagement for work. According to Instagram, no changes will be made to algorithms and everyone will still have access to analytics.

What do you make of this? Is this a positive or a negative move by Instagram?
