A tourist is recovering in hospital after he ‘nearly drowned’ at one of Malta’s most popular bathing spots.
The Brazilian teenager was hauled from the sea after getting into difficulty with swimming at Balluta Bay in St Julian’s.
Two other bathers were forced to rescue the 19-year-old man after spotting him in distress in the water.
Several eyewitnesses claimed the teenager ‘almost lost consciousness’ during the terrifying ordeal, which resulted in him being hauled from the sea.
Malta Police said the emergency services were alerted at around 3pm on Sunday.
A police spokesman told 89.7 Bay: ‘Police went immediately on site where preliminary investigations showed that a 19-year-old Brazilian man found himself in difficulty while he was swimming at Balluta Bay.
‘The victim was taken ashore by another man that was nearby and an ambulance was called on site to take him to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment. Later he was certified as suffering from serious injuries.’
An investigation has been launched.
The popular beach in Balluta Bay reopened to the public last month after being beefed up with additional sand.
