If you’re a diehard fan of movies set in outer space, then you’ve probably heard of Netflix’s latest sci-fi film Stowaway, which sees a three-person crew embarking on a two-year-long journey to Mars… but they are accidentally and unexpectedly joined by an engineer, with supplies limited for just three astronauts.
So, if you’re looking for similar titles to watch from the comfort of your own home, we’ve gathered a list of awe-inspiring works with high-end graphics…
Okay, let’s be real – this is a hard one to miss, especially since it’s a Christopher Nolan movie AND it stars Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey, and Jessica Chastain! Oh, and bonus, it’s on Netflix!
Like many of his other films, Nolan’s Interstellar will leave you scratching your head in the best way possible. It follows the story of Cooper, a former NASA pilot who returns to the station to save mankind with physicist Professor Brand, as Earth becomes uninhabitable. Above all, the movie touches upon time dilation, as the astronauts attempt to travel through a wormhole to search for a new home near Saturn.
Space Sweepers (2021)
Although this title is pretty recent, not to mention it’s also on Netflix, its storyline is actually set in a dystopian world in 2092, in a large corporation called UTS which is building a new habitable home on Mars for the elite. But, The Victory Ship – a crew that cleans up floating debris in outer space – encounters Dorothy, a child robot classified as a dangerous weapon…
The Martian (2015)
Astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, is left stranded on Mars after his crew leaves him behind following a brutal storm. Using leftover supplies, he must find the best way to survive while sending signals to Earth that he’s still alive. Slowly, Mark learns to make Mars inhabitable by growing plants and sterilising the soil.
I mean, who doesn’t love a Sandra Bullock and George Clooney movie? Medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone goes on her first shuttle mission alongside commander astronaut Matt Kowalsky. The two get stranded in outer space after their ship gets hit during a spacewalk and struggle to return back home to Earth.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Directed by George Clooney, this Netflix-screen adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s 2016 novel Good Morning, Midnight follows George Clooney as Augustine Lofthouse, a lone scientist in the Arctic.
With the Earth no longer habitable after a global catastrophe, Augustine makes a trip across the Arctic circle in an attempt to warn a group of returning astronauts to steer away from the planet.
First Man (2018)
Set in the ‘60s and based on the 2005 book of the same name, First Man tells the story of Neil Armstrong reaching the moon through the Apollo 11 mission. After years of risky test flights, Armstrong and his team embarked on the historic journey on July 16, 1969. Bonus points: it stars Ryan Gosling AND it’s on Netflix!
