Help for Maltese blind couple robbed of life savings

It seems Maltese generosity knows no bounds.

Good Samaritans have come to the rescue of a blind couple from Zejtun who were cruelly robbed of their life savings.

Almost cash €3,000 was raised thanks to generous donations from members of a Maltese football forum on Facebook, who were appalled when they heard about the story.

Mario Farrugia and Therese Micallef are still recovering from the shock of their terrifying ordeal after a robber wearing a mask forced his way into their home and got away with €3,000 last week.

Mr Farrugia said: ‘We were saving up money for our own funerals but it was all taken from us.’

As reported on One News, the robber told them that he was there to collect an outstanding debt for an unpaid electricity bill, which turned out to be a scam.

He then raided the couple’s savings tin.

Mr Farrugia added: ‘I couldn’t catch up with him since I’m blind, so we started shouting for help and crying.’

Bill payment company ARMS said it would never send an employee to demand instant payment from vulnerable customers.

Police are investigating the robbery.
