Neighbours have spoken of their ‘complete shock’ after the tragic death of a toddler at her home in Malta.
The 16-month-old girl plunged from the landing of a fourth-storey flat in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the infant fell down the main stairwell of an apartment block in Lampara Street.
Her devastated parents, who are Swiss but work in Malta, are being comforted by friends following the tragedy.
A neighbour said: ‘It’s a terrible thing to lose a child. Her parents are utterly devastated.
‘She appeared to be thriving and was a very happy baby who was always smiling.
‘It has come as a complete shock to everyone here.’
Another neighbour added: ‘It’s totally tragic. I don’t know what happened but people in the street have been upset and are just hoping the family are okay.’
A Malta Police spokeswoman told 89.7 Bay: ‘At around 3.30pm on Tuesday, police received a report that an 16-month-old child had fallen down the stairwell of a block of flats at an address in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq.
‘She was given emergency CPR on site and was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, where she later died.’
Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo has launched an inquiry.
