Gozo Minister insists a Gozo tunnel ‘is still needed’

Gozo still needs a tunnel link to Malta despite the success of the fourth ferry, according to the Gozo Minister.

Justyne Caruana said the tunnel was the only way to reduce the gap between Malta and Gozo’s economies.

She added: ‘The ferry and the tunnel are addressing two separate issues.

‘The tunnel will establish a permanent link between the two islands and will lead to an upgrade in infrastructure and a boost Gozo’s economy.

‘The additional ferry won’t address the issue.’

The minister was speaking at a news conference on Friday to launch Gozo Channel’s new mobile app.

The app allows passengers to get updates on timetables and services, and gives them information on weather and traffic

Clients could also use it to monitor queues leading to the ferry terminals at Mgarr and Cirkewwa.

Almost two million people used Gozo Channel this summer.

The ferry operator saw a 7.7% increase in vehicles and 3.4% growth in passenger numbers between June and September.
