Joshua Safran, Gossip Girl’s writer, has revealed that he never intended Dan Humphrey, played by Penn Badgley, to be Gossip Girl.
Gossip Girl has entertained the fans for five full years as they tried to guess who this secretive blogger is.
Safran, who is now taking care of the upcoming Gossip Girl remake, stated that the original series took an unexpected turn. In many ways, Nate was Dan’s polar opposite. Dan was poor whereas, Nate was born in riches and power. Both of them spent the entire series attempting to build their own identities outside of the positions they were born into in terms of social class.
After his father was sentenced to prison, Nate spent time trying to develop his own profession, and he even had an entire storyline where he tried to figure out who Gossip Girl was and bring her down.
It wasn’t until the Gossip Girl series finale, “New York I Love You, XOXO,” that “Lonely Boy” Dan Humphrey of Brooklyn was revealed to be Gossip Girl all along.
Safren told The Daily Beast; “Yes, I agree there are things that don’t line up, but it had to be Dan. I wanted it to be Nate, and it actually makes much more sense when it’s Nate – even when it doesn’t make sense. I mean, it would have been great to never reveal it.”
According to Safran, Nate Archibald, played by Chace Crawford, was originally supposed to be Gossip Girl. “I think we all came to the conclusion that it might be Nate by the end of season four, and then we spent season five teeing it up.’”
Do you think Nate was a better fit for Gossip Girl? Will you be watching the remake?
