Tributes to girl, 10, killed in Manikata car crash

Tributes have been paid to a schoolgirl from Mtarfa who died after a crash on a narrow country road.

Elisa Buhagiar, 10, was a passenger in her father’s Toyota Aygo when it hit a wall and rolled onto its roof.

Friends and teachers at St Joseph’s School in Blata l-Bajda, where Elisa was a pupil, described her as ‘always smiling’.

The school cancelled its annual summer concert on Friday morning as a mark of respect.

Malta P0lice told 89.7 Bay the tragic accident happened at around 5.30pm on Thursday near Manikata.

The crash also involved a Nissan Leaf, driven by a 35-year-old woman from Mellieha.

Elisa’s 10-year-old friend Mattea Scerri, who was also a passenger, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A spokesman for The Malta Police Force said: ‘Both girls and the driver were taken to Mater Dei Hospital for further medical treatment. Unfortunately, one of the girls was certified dead shortly after arriving at Mater Dei Hospital.’

Police are investigating reports that the accident happened when another car which was being driven by a tourist the wrong way down the one-way street suddenly stopped and started to reverse.

They are said to be examining security camera footage in the area to try to trace the third car.
