Minister for Education and Employment Owen Bonnici has announced that after the provision of lunches to those students who are on Scheme 9 and are therefore considered to be in need of material assistance, a further 250 students on Scheme 9 will be receiving free internet access with an investment of €40,000.
These students, which have been identified as lacking internet access at home, will be provided with with a device which will connect them to the Internet – which has now become a crucial necessity, especially given that most of the educational services are being provided online.
Apart from this the Ministry will also be providing computers, laptops and tablets to students falling under Scheme 9, who do not have such devices.
Minister Bonnici also announced that he has donated a month’s salary to the Office of the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Education and Employment to be used for the purpose of buying computers, laptops or tablets to be used as part of this new scheme.
He appealed to private companies to also consider donating or loaning computers for free, for the benefit of students in need.
