WATCH: Freak storm hits Malta on first day of summer

Malta Police have warned drivers to take extra care after a freak storm left dozens of roads flooded.

Torrential rain hit several parts of Malta on Thursday afternoon, on the first day of summer.

The flash downpour left cars swamped by a huge flood on the Mriehel Industrial Estate.

The water was almost waist high in one car park.

Streets in Qormi, Birkirkara, Attard, Hamrun, Msida and Balzan were also badly affected by the rain.

Some showers had been forecast by the Met Office in Luqa but the sudden heavy rain caught many people out.

In Siggiewi and Qormi, volunteers rushed to cover the street decorations ahead of this weekend’s traditional festa celebrations.

89.7 Bay listeners in Gozo, St Paul’s Bay and Mellieha reported dry and sunny weather as the rest of Malta was hit by the rain.

Forecasters said Friday should see temperatures rise to around 31°C in Malta.

The weekend is expected to be dry and mild with sunny spells and cloudy patches.

Mriehel now last rain before summer kicks in 🙂
