Downpour in Bugibba as the rest of Malta laps up the sun

It’s been one of the hottest summers in Malta for years – but St Paul’s Bay got a real soaking on Tuesday afternoon.

Heavy showers hit Xemxija, Bugibba and Qawra – while the rest of the Maltese Islands continued to lap up the summer sunshine.

Forecasters warned a similar brief spell of wet weather could return on Wednesday.

Around 5.7mm of rainfall fell in less than 30 minutes in the St Paul’s Bay area before a small pocket of rain headed north and out over the sea.

Andrea Muscat from the respected Gozo Weather Page added: ‘Just as we predicted a week ago, isolated showers have been experienced today.

‘A heavy shower also occurred in St Paul’s Bay, Qawra and Bugibba.

‘Another similar day is expected tomorrow as a cool and unstable air mass over the central Mediterranean continues forming cumuliform clouds.

‘These clouds will grow steadily during the day, before producing a similar localised shower.’
