Malta’s ex-Chief Justice Giuseppe Mifsud Bonnici passes away

Former Chief Justice Giuseppe Mifsud Bonnici, known by many as ‘Ġioġio’ has died at 88 years of age.

Mifsud Bonnici, the elder brother of President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, was appointed judge in 1988 and served as Chief Justice between 1990 and 1992.

Born in Cospicua on July 17th 1930, he was an omnipresent lecturer at the University of Malta within the Faculty of Laws between 1966 and 2014.

‘Ġioġio’ was also President of the Malta Football Association between 1968 and 1982.

Between 1992 and 1998, he served as Judge of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Many described Judge Mifsud Bonnici as an initiator, proposer and an instrumental figure in our country’s judicial system.
