After an elimination from the Champions League second qualifying round, Valletta have equalled Birkirkara FC’s European record by reaching the Europa League third qualifying round.
Can they go a step further and reach the next stage?
Playing their first leg match away at the Astana Arena in Nur-Sultan today at 4PM, Valletta will be looking for a positive result.
With Gzira United out of the Europa League qualification stage, Valletta is the only side left keeping the hopes of the Maltese up.
It won’t be easy, that’s for sure, as the champions from Kazakhstan have a good record in European football history.
While no Maltese club has ever made it to the group stages of the Champions League and the Europa League, Astana were the first club from Kazakhstan to be in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League four years ago.
In the Europa League, their best result came in the 2017-18 season when they reached the Round of 32.
FC Astana: winners of 5 Kazakhstan Premier Leagues, versus Valletta FC: winners of 25 Maltese Premier Leagues.
Today’s match should be a fantastic start to this qualifying round.
Together with the supporters of Valletta FC, we hope that the Maltese can rise to the challenge and start on a good note!
