Experience Gozo’s Citadel by stunning candlelight

Gozo‘s Citadel is set for a magical makeover this weekend.

The UNESCO World Heritage city will glow by candlelight on Saturday 16 March.

This year’s festival of lights is back in all its beautiful glory with more than 30,000 candles lighting up the historic narrow streets to celebrate ‘Lejl Imkebbes’.

The night will include special historic re-enactments, live entertainment and plenty of children’s activities.

The medieval city also offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Gozo‘s hills and valleys, villages and churches – and a truly Instagrammable view right across the sea to Malta.

The Village of Santa Lucija lights thousands of burning lights on the night of their main festival each year. The village has less than 100 residents.

Here are five things not to miss at the Citadel in Victoria on Saturday evening:

1. Head to the Citadel Visitor Centre

The state-of-the-art visitor centre is at the heart of the Citadel. It features a brilliant audio-visual presentation, showcasing the landmark’s history. Entrance is free.

2. Tour the museums open for free

The Citadel hosts a number of museums covering everything from folklore to archaeology and nature. The Old Prison Museum is the oldest jail in Gozo. Heritage Malta’s museums at the Citadel will be open for free between 6pm and 11pm.

3. The views are awesome

As you walk along the streets you can appreciate the narrow winding and cobbled streets but once on top, you can enjoy the panoramic view of Gozo’s hills and valleys.

4. There’ll be lots to eat on the night

Food stalls offering both Maltese and other food, particularly Indian, will make the event a night to suit all tastes and ages.

5. Don’t forget the Citadel Ditch

The Citadel’s Ditch has emerged as a lovely open space that we never knew existed. The area, which was derelict for decades, has transformed into a beautiful public garden to be enjoyed by everyone.

‘Lejl Imkebbes’ will be held on Saturday 16 March from 6pm onwards. Entrance is free.

The event is organised by the Ministry for Gozo and VisitGozo.com.
