The devastated family of Jake Cutajar have described him as a ‘genuinely great person’.
Jake – who friends described as ‘a shining light of Cospicua’ – died during a Facebook live stream from his home on Friday.
He collapsed on the way to the bathroom after taking off his oxygen mask for a few seconds.
His body was discovered by his shocked parents when they returned home.
Jake, 21, suffered from a rare respiratory disorder which caused extremely low levels of oxygen in his blood.
Despite his condition, he still managed to play a big part in Cospicua’s feast celebrations every year as well as the Grand Harbour regatta.
He was also a proud member of the Youth Inc group.
A family friend told 89.7 Bay: ‘Jake had a strong religious faith and used his Facebook page to post prayers for those suffering from illness.
‘His proudest moment was meeting the Prime Minister at Castille in Valletta earlier this year. He also dreamed of meeting the Pope one day but was far too ill to fly.
‘He had a very natural sense of humour that made him a joy to be around. Jake had a laid back, selfless personality that made him impossible not to get on with.’
Dozens of emotional tributes poured in on social media from friends and relatives.
One wrote: ‘Rest in peace Jake, we will truly miss you. You always put a smile on our faces.’
Another posted: ‘Jake you were a great young man. I’m glad that you shared part of your life with us when you were at Youth Inc.’
A third added: ‘May he rest in peace. My sympathy to all his family. Jake pray for us from heaven.’
