Eight hurt as car crashes on St Julian’s seafront

Eight tourists have been rushed to hospital after they were hit by a car when it mounted the pavement in St Julian’s.

Malta Police told 89.7 Bay the horrific crash happened in George Borg Olivier Street at around 4.50am on Friday.

The 20-year-old driver from Birkirkara skidded off the road and hit a group of holidaymakers as they were heading back to their hotels after a night out.

The injured included four Dutch men aged between 19 and 25, two women from Croatia, aged 21 and 23, and two British men, aged 25.

Malta’s health minister Chris Fearne said one of the victims was in a ‘critical condition’ at Mater Dei Hospital.

Eyewitnesses said the car also slammed into two trees and hit a lamppost.

The driver has been arrested and is being questioned at the police headquarters in Floriana, according to Net News.

The road, near the City of London pub, was closed to traffic for around three hours as an investigation was carried out.
