Chocolate lovers have new reason to celebrate.
Scientists have discovered the sweet treat is good for us.
Eating just a few squares of dark chocolate every day lowers blood pressure in just one month, a study suggests.
While milk chocolate has its benefits, 90 per cent cocoa was found to have the strongest effect.
Researchers in Portugal said this was due to dark chocolate being richer in the powerful antioxidant flavanols.
The research was carried out by the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra.
What is dark chocolate?
Dark chocolate is a rich, bitter chocolate that is typically made of cocoa solids, sugar and cocoa butter.
The percentage of cocoa affects the flavour and bitterness.
There isn’t a minimum amount of cocoa that needs to be present for the chocolate to be labelled ‘dark’, so you typically find dark chocolate containing anything from around 50% cocoa all the way up to 100%.
Most brands sold in Malta contain 70%, 85% or 90% cocoa.
