Massive €32 million cocaine bust at Malta Freeport

Cocaine with a street value of €32.4 million has been seized at the Malta Freeport.

The drugs were discoevered hidden inside four containers.

The haul was made after customs officers scanned 12 containers from South America which were bound for an unnamed EU state.

Four of the containers, which were loaded with fruit, were flagged during routine scans at the Freeport.

In three of them, large packets of cocaine were spotted hidden in refrigerator compartments.

In total, customs officers found 240 packets of the drug weighing a total of 288kg.

Malta’s prime minister Joseph Muscat tweeted: ‘Well done to our Customs and Security Services for intercepting four containers with 288kg of cocaine destined for the international market, and dealing a massive blow to a global drug ring.’
