Dozens of newly planted trees have been destroyed in a senseless act of vandalism at a Maltese beauty spot
Some of the 150 saplings were chopped down while others completely uprooted at l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha.
It’s believed the vandals attacked between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
Members of the Federation for Hunting and Conservation planted trees in the area last week, only to learn their hard work had been destroyed.
A plaque, to explain the afforestation scheme launched by the Ministry of the Environment, was also vandalised.
GHKNK Mellieha described the destruction as ‘absolutely disgraceful’.
A spokesman told 89.7 Bay: ‘It’s disgusting. This area is a public place enjoyed by tourists and all the Maltese public.
‘Why would anyone want to pull up trees? We’re shocked.
‘It really is a senseless act that we’re struggling to understand.’
Malta Police would like to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious at l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha on Saturday night.
89.7 Bay’s Making Malta Green and Clean campaign is also supported by the Ministry for the Environment.
