Last week, patients and workers at Mater Dei Hospital were left aghast as they found corpses wrapped in body bags lining an underground corridor.
This came as a lift that connects the wards to a tunnel running between the hospital and the morgue that is out of service. Unfortunately, the tunnel is only accessible via this lift.
The corpses were then placed in the corridor until workers picked them up and took them to the mortuary by ambulance. Sources have revealed that this is being done only until the lift is changed to a more energy-efficient one, forming part of the process of replacing all lifts within the hospital.
However, their presence didn’t go down well with patients and staff members, who were shocked to learn that they had been left there unattended.
The ongoing works on the mortuary lift are expected to be complete and back in operation by this week.
