British company ‘to create 1,000 new jobs’ in Malta

One of the world’s biggest online gambling companies is set to move to Malta, creating around 1,000 new jobs.

Bet 365, which has almost 23 million customers around the world, will reportedly relocate its operations to Tigne Point in Sliema from its current offices in Stoke-on-Trent and Gibraltar.

Brexit has been blamed for the company’s decision.

An industry source told The Sunday Times of Malta: ‘It is not every day that 1,000 well-paid employees are relocated to Malta.

‘Apart from the fact that we are talking about the largest sports betting company in the world, with some 23 million customers, 1,000 new individuals and their families looking for a place to stay for quite some time on a small island will mean significant business.’

The company is said to have been considering a move to Malta for some time.

In a statement, Bet365 confirmed it plans to open a new office in Sliema and ‘scale up its presence’ in Malta.

It said newspaper reports that 1,000 Gibraltar-based employees would be moved to Malta were ‘speculation’.

Malta has become attractive to British online gambling companies since the Brexit referendum result because of Malta’s low tax policies and membership of the European Union.
