The Russia-Ukraine war has officially started.
Russian soldiers have launched a significant military assault on Ukraine, with explosions reported near key cities across the country.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated in a pre-dawn television broadcast that Russia had no plans to conquer Ukraine, but that if anyone tried to stop him, Moscow would receive a response “immediately.”
Attacks on Ukrainian military targets were reported shortly after. “Putin has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” Ukraine declared.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared martial law across the country in a video statement released Thursday morning.
“No panic. We’re strong. We’re ready for anything. We’ll defeat everyone, because we are Ukraine,” the president said.
He claimed that Russia bombed Ukraine’s military facilities and border guard battalions.
There have also been reports of explosives in various Ukrainian locations, as well as gunshots near Kyiv’s main Boryspil airport. Warning sirens could be heard wailing around the city, which has a population of almost three million people.
