BREAKING: New COVID-19 Measures Announced, Effective from Tomorrow to the 11th April

The Prime Minister, together with the Deputy Prime Minister and the Superintendent of Public Health addressed a press conference, during which new COVID-19 measures were announced.

In brief, the measures, which come into force as from tomorrow to the 11th April, are the following:

  • Restaurants/Kiosks and Snack Bars will offer only takeaway services
  • Resturants in Hotels and Guest Houses will only be available for residents
  • Nightclubs, Bars and Bandclubs will remain closed
    • A €6,000 fine applies in case any of the above regulations are not adhered to

  • Mass-events will still be prohibited, apart from weddings and religious functions
  • Events held in private residences cannot have people from more than four households invited, where a €100 fine applies, per person.
  • If there is a mass event organised for commercial and profit purposes, the event organiser will be liable to a €6,000 fine
  • Licensed places of accommodation cannot accommodate more than the licensed amount of beds the place has. This is similar to the measure which was announced during the Carnival period.
  • Contact sports for those aged 16 and under will be prohibited.
  • Visiting hours within hospitals will be suspended, and the planned relaxation of measures in old people’s homes will be postponed

From Monday, Government officials and those employed with public entities will be asked to work from home, where this is possible. When announcing this, the Prime Minister also encouraged the private sector to do the same.

These measures will be applicable for a few weeks, during which the National Vaccination Programme will pick up speed, thus resulting in a decrease in new daily positive COVID-19 cases.

The Prime Minister also announced that the wage supplement has been extended till June, and also announced that Restaurants and Kiosks and Snack Bars will go back to the full Wage Supplement, due to the new measures announced today, adding that support will also be given to those restaurants who need assistance in taking their business online.
