Bars and Band Clubs To Remain Closed “For the Coming Weeks”

PM Robert Abela has announced that the legal notice which was issued in October which ordered the closure of bars and band clubs till the 1st December will be extended for the coming weeks, as a precautionary measure against the spread of COVID-19.

He said that this difficult decision is being taken after meetings with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne, when it was decided that an extension of the legal notice will be the most prudent thing to do, in this situation.

According to the latest report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the number of new COVID-19 cases could drop by close to 50% by the end of the year, if current measures are kept in place, leading also to fewer hospitalisations, and fatalities.

The legal notice came into force on Thursday 29th October, as all bars and band clubs had to shut their doors until the 1st of December to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, while snack bars and kiosks could however stay open, but cannot provide alcohol and need to close between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
