Luzzu is a Maltese film with a powerful story, so much so that it has received worldwide critical acclaim. Now, it will be getting its first theatrical release in Malta on 8th September 2021, over at Eden Cinemas.
This will mark the first time that the Sundance-Award winning feature will make its way to the Maltese screen, with a limited red carpet event also taking place a few days prior on 3rd September.
Luzzu was filmed by Alex Camilleri and produced by Rebecca Anastasi, Ramin Bahrani, Camilleri himself, and Oliver Mallie. It was also the first local film to ever premiere at the esteemed Sundance Festival earlier this year – not to mention Jesmark Scicluna, a real Maltese fisherman, won the Special Jury Award for his role in the film!
The movie portrays the homegrown tale of the two real fishermen as they come to terms with the hardships of their industry in the modern age, turning instead towards an illegal black market to care for their family and livelihood.
As Camilleri shared, ‘I’ve been touched by the response to Luzzu which has resonated with viewers around the world. But I know this film will be most appreciated by Maltese audiences. I’m thrilled to finally bring Luzzu home’.
Ticket sales from Eden Cinemas for the premiere event are now open.
