The legend that is Mads Mikkelsen is reportedly the first-in-line to walk a mile in Johnny Depp’s shoes, replacing him in Fantastic Beasts 3 in the role of Gellert Grindelwald, which has been vacated since Depp was formally asked to step down – when he lost his libel case against The Sun and its executive editor.
It all started two years ago when a newspaper article on ‘The Sun’ speculated J.K. SomeRowling’s decision of casting Johnny Depp in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films.
The newspaper called the A-list actor a “wife beater” – a title that Depp has condemned. The Sun alleged that he had been violent towards ex-wife Amber Herd and led to the unraveling of graphic and intimate details of their chaotic relationship.
The Hannibal actor is said to be in early talks about playing the movie villain for the third instalment of the franchise, which was created by J.K. Rowling after the Harry Potter series.
Meanwhile, however, over 145,000 people have signed a petition demanding that Johnny Depp returns as the Fantastic Beasts 3 villain. Fans of the franchise have not taken the news of Depp’s stepping down very well, and even threatened to boycott the series.
The change.org petition says: “Johnny Depp was asked by Warner Bros to resign and leave his role of Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts 3 movie. This happened because of the verdict of his case with “The Sun” tabloid that was completely unfair. We want him back! Warner Bros should listen to the public or we will boycott the movie!!!”
