Rough sea cancels annual charity swim off Sliema

The organisers of Malta’s most popular festive charity swim have defended their decision to cancel the event at the last minute.

The Thomas Smith Christmas Charity Swim was due to be held off Independence Gardens in Sliema on Sunday morning – but was called off because of the rough sea.

The insurance and shipping company posted on social media: ‘The sea at the pier in Sliema has been deemed unsafe for swimming due to rough weather conditions, therefore the team together with Civil Protection Malta have decided to cancel the event.

‘Although we are saddened with this decision, safety is our main priority.’

The annual swim has grown in popularity over the years, attracting hundreds of swimmers who brave the chilly sea in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.
