Following yesterday’s grilling by the Public Appointments Committee, Angelo Gafa was today officially appointed as the new Police Commissioner.
This appointment follows a public call, and a subsequent selection process led by the Public Service Commission.
This is the first time in the history of Malta that the Commissioner of Police has been appointed with this new system.
The Minister for Internal Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri noted that this change was a positive one that was recognised also by the Venice Commission. The minister said that this change is one of a series of reforms that will be taking place in the Police Force.
“This is one of the main changes that our country has made in these first months of the year to send a clear message that the politician was ready to leave his hands powers that have always been exclusively his,” said Minister Camilleri.
